Back to My Youth

I started playing golf 60 years ago. public golf courses where simple, more like open pastures. These courses lacked the investment to provide pristine playing conditions. There were no sprinkling systems and when weather turned dry, the course fairways were hard with bare spots. Tee boxes took a lot of abuse. Even greens showed bare spots from disease or lack of moisture. But it was still golf and chasing around a white ball was challenging fun even without idea fairways and greens. On September 8, I found the nine hole course Brown Road near Albion, NY. Playing here was a chance to check off playing in Orleans county.
.

The nine hole course is a combination of par 3 and par 4 holes. The course is pretty level but there are some water hazards and the par fours are challenging. There are some turtle back green that are difficult. The conditions were not pristine but it was playing golf. The owner Tom Mulka is a great host and is delightful to share a drink with after a round and swap stories on golfing. Often the most enjoyable aspects of golf is the golfers you meet, not just about the quality of the course.
