Don’t Be Fooled by Length

Golf courses are often defined by it’s overall length. The pros are always playing courses greater than 7000 yards. But, they also routinely hit 300-yard drives. Recreation golfers consider courses challenging at around 6000 yards. As a senior golfer, I am often moving up to tees shorter than 6000. While in Florida, I found a Palm Beach County course I had not previously played named Golf Club of Jupiter. The course offers five sets of tees ranging from 4000 yards to 5700 yards with the typical white tees measuring 5000 yards. The course is a par 70 with 6 par 3 holes. Some golfers might choose to skip this course because it is not quite conventional and might not be as challenging. First, the course was in very good condition – fairways and greens. Staff was very efficient and welcoming. I frequently saw rangers and cart girls on the course. The course is sandwiched within an older housing development, thus shorter than typical yardage. Despite the length, this is a good test of golf. You will likely use all of the clubs (and maybe golf balls) in your bag. Trees, water, and out-of-bounds white stakes line most of the fairways. Doglegs and sand traps force you to be consistent in your yardage. Playing here is a delightful test of golf and I look forward to playing it again.
