On May 7 and 9, I played two more counties on my quest to play every county in New York. These two public courses have similarities in that they offer unique layouts with changes in elevation and well-maintained greens.

Putnam County Golf Course in Mahopac, NY is a well-maintained course. The undulated greens make you think about your shots. It was always important to be below the hole, as downhill putts and chips were challenging. The course is compact, with parallel fairways that result in balls flying across your fairway.

You could walk this course since it is compact, but there are some hills to climb. Putnam County course is a high-quality golf course in a beautiful setting.

Rockland Lake State Park in Valley Cottage, NY is one of the many New York sources in the state parks. This is a well-designed course with valleys to hit across and elevated greens to try to reach. There are beautiful horizon views from the course’s high points.

The scenic and serene tree-framed course starkly contrasts the nearby urban areas. With the many hills, this is a more challenging walking course. The course shows wear with sand traps and tees needing maintenance. But, the fairways and greens are well maintained. The unique holes in a beautiful setting make for a lovely golf outing.
